The Evolution of Technology – The History of Computers

While computers are now an important part of the lives of human beings, there was a time where computers did not exist. Knowing the history of computers and how much progression has been made can help you understand just how complicated and innovative the creation of computers really is.
Unlike most devices, the computer is one of the few inventions that does not have one specific inventor. Throughout the development of the computer, many people have added their creations to the list required to make a computer work. Some of the inventions have been different types of computers, and some of them were parts required to allow computers to be developed further.
The Beginning
Perhaps the most significant date in the history of computers is the year 1936. It was in this year that the first “computer” was developed. It was created by Konrad Zuse and dubbed the Z1 Computer. This computer stands as the first as it was the first system to be fully programmable. There were devices prior to this, but none had the computing power that sets it apart from other electronics.
It wasn’t until 1942 that any business saw profit and opportunity in computers. This first company was called ABC computers, owned and operated by John Atanasoff and Clifford Berry. Two years later, the Harvard Mark I computer was developed, furthering the science of computing.
Over the course of the next few years, inventors all over the world began to search more into the study of computers, and how to improve upon them. Those next ten years say the introduction of the transistor, which would become a vital part of the inner workings of the computer, the ENIAC 1 computer, as well as many other types of systems. The ENIAC 1 is perhaps one of the most interesting, as it required 20,000 vacuum tubes to operate. It was a massive machine, and started the revolution to build smaller and faster computers.
The age of computers was forever altered by the introduction of International Business Machines, or IBM, into the computing industry in 1953. This company, over the course of computer history, has been a major player in the development of new systems and servers for public and private use. This introduction brought about the first real signs of competition within computing history, which helped to spur faster and better development of computers. Their first contribution was the IBM 701 EDPM Computer.
A Programming Language Evolves
A year later, the first successful high level programming language was created. This was a programming language not written in ‘assembly’ or binary, which are considered very low level languages. FORTRAN was written so that more people could begin to program computers easily.
The year 1955, the Bank of America, coupled with Stanford Research Institute and General Electric, saw the creation of the first computers for use in banks. The MICR, or Magnetic Ink Character Recognition, coupled with the actual computer, the ERMA, was a breakthrough for the banking industry. It wasn’t until 1959 that the pair of systems were put into use in actual banks.
During 1958, one of the most important breakthroughs in computer history occurred, the creation of the integrated circuit. This device, also known as the chip, is one of the base requirements for modern computer systems. On every motherboard and card within a computer system, are many chips that contain information on what the boards and cards do. Without these chips, the systems as we know them today cannot function.
Gaming, Mice, & the Internet
For many computer users now, games are a vital part of the computing experience. 1962 saw the creation of the first computer game, which was created by Steve Russel and MIT, which was dubbed Spacewar.
The mouse, one of the most basic components of modern computers, was created in 1964 by Douglass Engelbart. It obtained its name from the “tail” leading out of the device.
One of the most important aspects of computers today was invented in 1969. ARPA net was the original Internet, which provided the foundation for the Internet that we know today. This development would result in the evolution of knowledge and business across the entire planet.
It wasn’t until 1970 that Intel entered the scene with the first dynamic RAM chip, which resulted in an explosion of computer science innovation.
On the heels of the RAM chip was the first microprocessor, which was also designed by Intel. These two components, in addition to the chip developed in 1958, would number among the core components of modern computers.
A year later, the floppy disk was created, gaining its name from the flexibility of the storage unit. This was the first step in allowing most people to transfer bits of data between unconnected computers.
The first networking card was created in 1973, allowing data transfer between connected computers. This is similar to the Internet, but allows for the computers to connect without use of the Internet.
Household PC’s Emerge
The next three years were very important for computers. This is when companies began to develop systems for the average consumer. The Scelbi, Mark-8 Altair, IBM 5100, Apple I and II, TRS-80, and the Commodore Pet computers were the forerunners in this area. While expensive, these machines started the trend for computers within common households.
One of the most major breathroughs in computer software occurred in 1978 with the release of the VisiCalc Spreadsheet program. All development costs were paid for within a two week period of time, which makes this one of the most successful programs in computer history.
1979 was perhaps one of the most important years for the home computer user. This is the year that WordStar, the first word processing program, was released to the public for sale. This drastically altered the usefulness of computers for the everyday user.
The IBM Home computer quickly helped revolutionize the consumer market in 1981, as it was affordable for home owners and standard consumers. 1981 also saw the the mega-giant Microsoft enter the scene with the MS-DOS operating system. This operating system utterly changed computing forever, as it was easy enough for everyone to learn.
The Competition Begins : Apple vs. Microsoft
Computers saw yet another vital change during the year of 1983. The Apple Lisa computer was the first with a graphical user interface, or a GUI. Most modern programs contain a GUI, which allows them to be easy to use and pleasing for the eyes. This marked the beginning of the out dating of most text based only programs.
Beyond this point in computer history, many changes and alterations have occurred, from the Apple-Microsoft wars, to the developing of microcomputers and a variety of computer breakthroughs that have become an accepted part of our daily lives. Without the initial first steps of computer history, none of this would have been possible.
What Pole Barns Building Suppliers Don’t Want You to Know

Most pole barn kits utilize the simple construction technique of post and beam construction, which anyone can do on their own with a little basic carpentry experience. Don’t have the expertise? Then hire a carpenter by the hour to help you plan and build your project. Simple pole building projects can be constructed over a weekend if you have pre-arranged all of your basic building materials and have several friends or family members available to help you with the heavy lifting. There are 3 basic steps to constructing your own pole barn:
STEP 1 – POLE BARNS PLANNING. You’ll need to decide how big your pole building will need to be, and then adjust your overall measurements slightly to be a multiple of standard building material supply lengths. This design tip alone will save you hundreds of saw cuts and carpentry time. You’ll also need to decide if your pole barn will require concrete slab foundation inside, or if a dirt floor is all you need. If you plan to construct your own pole barn we highly recommend you spend the $10 to purchase a decent pole barn plan – this will save you many headaches and dramatically speed up your construction time.
STEP 2 – POLE BUILDING SUPPLIES. All of the necessary supplies for a basic pole barn can be sourced from your local building supply store. You’ll need some concrete mix for the post footings, and more if you decide to pour a concrete floor slab. You’ll also need treated posts, your preferred siding material, 2 x 4′s, nails, fasteners, and your preferred roofing material. To speed things up you can pre-order roof trusses, or buy gusset fasteners to build your own.
STEP 3 – RAISING THE BARN! Once the concrete has set in the footings you are ready to begin framing the post skeleton of your building plan. This is a very simple process that is simply repeated until all the post framing is completed. Once the frame is in place you can attach the outer siding to the frame. From there you can move to the roofing truss installation, roof framing and roof finishing. Popular choices for both siding and roofing are metal because its light, durable, cheap, and won’t rot or rust over its lifetime.
There you have it! Within a weekend you can construct and raise your very own pole barn. For those of you that might need a little more direction or help we strongly suggest you follow a plan for building pole barns, or even consider ordering a pre-cut pole barn kit.

How to Save a Movie From a Panasonic NV-GS11 Video Camera to a PC

I bought my Panasonic NV-GS11 video camera from eBay and for the cost, it seemed perfect. I liked the feel of the camera, it’s simplicity of use, until I tried to transfer my movie to a PC and that’s when the trouble started!
Normally, when you connect a camera using the USB connection, your PC recognises the device and you can use it straight away. I had no end of problems getting the PC to do this and I thought the driver was at fault.
The answer, in hindsight, is that in the menu there are 2 items for the USB Function, “web camera” and “DV Studio” – the software for acquiring still photos from the camera. Choose “web camera”, connect your camera to the PC via the USB connection and switch on the camera using the Playback mode. Check “My Computer” and there should be a video camera icon with “USB Video Device” beside it. Double click onto this icon will open up a page, where if you start your movie from the camera, you can see the results on the PC screen. Unfortunately, there’s nowhere on this page where you can save the movie itself.
I searched with Google and found the answer. Many people had the same issue but there didn’t seem to any answers. Eventually, I found one reply on a forum way down the page which provided the solution.
Download Windows Movie Maker from the Microsoft page. This is for Windows XP:-
http://www.download.com/Windows-Movie-Maker-Windows-XP-/3000-13631_4-10165075.html
Open Movie Maker and you will see ” Capture from video device” This allows you to save your movie into a directory of your choice and later burn the movie onto a CD using your favourite software.
I hope this is of some help to you all with the same problem I had. If you need any further assistance, drop me an email to brianparkin@parkinspatch.com

Virtual Worlds For Children, Tweens and Teens

Virtual worlds have become a growing power in kids’ online activities. In 2008, an estimated eight million US children and teens visited virtual worlds on a regular basis. It is estimated that by 2013 this number will be doubled. These online worlds are a relatively new phenomenon, so there isn’t much research on their impact on kids. As parents, we ask: Is it safe? Is it educational? Do our children benefit from this activity? In lack of long-term research the best answer seems to be that like every other activity we choose to do, when it is measured and in balance with other activities, it can be enjoyable, harmless and sometimes even educational. It is our responsibility as parents to direct our children to safe constructive activities that will help them to grow as people and become contributing citizens. The same thing is true for choosing online activities for them and specifically for virtual worlds. As parents we have to make sure that our children visit virtual worlds that are suited for their age and are safe for them. We also want to direct our children to virtual worlds that offer quality content and educational value.
What is a virtual world?
Virtual worlds are services which offer Internet users a computer simulated environment imitating the real world. In the virtual world the user interacts by using an avatar (a two-dimensional or a three-dimensional computer graphic identity, which represent a user’s alter ego or the user’s real persona) in online chats.
There are two main types:
Massively Multiplayer Online Games (MMOGs) -
These virtual worlds use point systems and competition in the simulation. They have winners and losers. Commercial MMOGs include Everquest and World of Warcraft.
Non-game worlds -
These virtual worlds are less game-like, or not games at all. They are more like social networking services like MySpace and Facebook, but with 3D simulation features. For example, Second Life, ActiveWorlds and The Sims Online.
What are the risks for kids in virtual worlds?
Children and teenagers can easily get absorbed in a virtual world. It is an enjoyable pastime allowing them to try different points of view and avatars. The danger is when a child is invested more in the virtual life than in real life. This may result in withdrawal from real life activities, poor social skills, loss of ability to distinguish between the real and the imaginary, etc. It is important to limit the time a child or teenager spends surfing virtual worlds in order to keep the child’s base in the real world.
Private information may be exposed in virtual worlds when a child is persuaded to give up his/her real identity to strangers. It is important to emphasize to the child not to give away private information under any circumstances.
Sometimes virtual worlds especially ones that are intended for teens can become violent environments. Many virtual worlds have guardians – adults that have avatars in the game and are there to keep the peace. These guardians can not always stop violent behavior. It is important for parents of teens to be involved in their children’s online activities and to instruct them how to behave in problematic situations.
Online predators sometimes use social network services and virtual worlds to target potential victims. They pose as children and gradually seduce them into an online relationship. This relationship might end in sexual abuse.
The chance of your child being targeted by online predator is low, but since such an encounter has severe consequences, parents should be aware and make sure that their kids don’t get involved in online relationships with strangers.
All of these risks are worrying, but it seems that the greatest risk in virtual worlds for kids is the inherently commercial nature of many of them. Kids are encouraged to buy clothes, toys, food, books and more for their avatars using the virtual world currency. In some worlds they have to play games in order to earn “money”, in some they buy the virtual world currency with real money. You can see in many virtual worlds, avatars that are dressed in high fashion clothing and have expensive cars and homes. Many virtual worlds have a strong correlation between consumption and citizenship. Kids are learning that in order to be a good citizen they have to buy the right stuff. Many virtual worlds also have a lot of advertisement.
In order to avoid this commercial nature, parents should direct their children to non-commercial virtual worlds that usually have more educational value.
What are the Benefits of Virtual Worlds for Children?
In virtual worlds kids are involved in informal learning. By trying different avatars, points of view and jobs they play out scenarios over and over from different angles. They can see what approach is best for them. They learn how to socialize, how to be Internet savvy, how to buy and sell online and how to be members of a society. They learn skills that they’ll need in the future workforce.
Matching the Virtual World to the Child’s Age
When choosing a virtual world for your kids or checking the ones your kids use, it is important to keep the age factor in mind. Today children surf in online worlds from the age of three (usually with adult help) to 18. It is important to see that the virtual world they enter is safe for their age and offers appropriate content.
There are three major age groups:
Young children – age 3-10. Kids in this age group are just starting to discover the cyber world. They often need help from an adult in order to surf. It is not recommended to let children at this age surf without adult supervision. It is important to make sure that the virtual worlds the child surfs are safe, enclosed environments. There should be no advertisement (or very little). Online chats and forums, if such exist, should be limited and monitored.
Tweens or juniors – age 10-14. Tweens are kids who are stuck in this phase between being young kids and being teens. Children at this age range usually have good technological and language abilities that allow them to surf freely. On the other hand, they lack the maturity and experience to help them understand the content that they encounter when surfing-they need adult guidance.
They are a vulnerable population. Their high technological abilities and desire to socialize exposes them to risks, as well as their PC and private family information.
Tweens will usually look for more complex online worlds that will allow them to chat with their friends freely. It is important for parents of tweens to be involved as much as they can in their kids’ online activities. Parents should direct their tweens to virtual worlds they find suited for them. Guidelines for Internet use should be defined. These guidelines should emphasize Web ethics and privacy protection. Include the child when defining the guidelines in order to make the child more committed to them. An Internet-use policy may help in making those guidelines clear. Parents should talk to their kids about Internet threats, such as: malware attacks, online predators, harassments, and give them examples of immediate solutions, for example: turning off the PC and notifying a parent. Most important is to give your children confidence about approaching the adults in the family in case they encounter suspicious behavior when surfing.
Teenagers – age 14-18. Teens have fully developed technological and language skills. They are confident surfing the Internet (sometimes more than their parents). The Internet becomes a strong social and educational tool in their life. Teens are usually more aware of the risks that exist on the web. On the other hand, in this age group there is a tendency for risk taking. In addition, teens usually use a PC in the privacy of their own room, or they go to places that allow them to surf without supervision. So it is nearly impossible to monitor the teenager’s Internet activities.
Teens will usually be attracted to adult virtual worlds. Adult virtual worlds are not always suited for teenagers. In some you can encounter cybersex activity and violence. It is important for parents of teens to keep being involved in their kids’ online activities. Offering teens appropriate websites that may interest them could be a great solution. There are virtual worlds for teens that offer great content and are non-commercial. Parents should also emphasize Web ethics to their teenagers and warn them about Internet threats.
In order to find a suitable virtual world for your kids you can check out – SafeWeb directory [http://safewebforchildren.com/pages/sub_category.php/?sub_category=Virtual%20Worlds]. This is a web directory that offers safe websites for kids.
3D TV Converter – Can You Change Your 2D Television to 3D?
With the recent release of a plethora of 3-dimensional feature films, the desire for 3D televisions in the home has risen dramatically. If you have seen films like Disney’s Up or James Cameron’s Avatar with special RealD glasses, you know that 3D can make one’s viewing experience much more enjoyable. In fact, Avator has been critically acclaimed to have the best visuals of any film, ever (thanks in large part to its use of 3-D).
The problem is, although people want 3D in their homes, many people don’t want to dish out the money for a new, “3D-ready” LCD display. So, the concept of buying a 3D TV Converter has been introduced to the public.
These 2D to 3D converters are surprisingly inexpensive: around $100. They have been around for a while (since as early as 2004), but have not had that much popularity. But in 2009 and early 2010, the sales of these products have shown a marked increase.
The problem is, these converters offer only cheap imitations of real 3D. They don’t actually make anything 3-dimensional. Rather, these converters just split the image on your TV into 2 images, then uses polarized lenses to make the image on your display “pop out”. However, the converters add no depth to the image.
On real 3-D ready televisions, the background of videos look like they are flush with the TV screen, while objects on the foreground pop out. The difference between the background and the foreground is what makes watching 3D movies enjoyable. Without depth, you are just watching the same movie, except the whole thing looks slightly enlarged.
Movie Review: Alvin and the Chipmunks – Chipwrecked

In 2007, the famous cartoon Alvin and the Chipmunks was converted to the big screen and instantly became a success. Shortly after in 2009, the sequel to the movie was released and it too was a success. In 2010, the producers at 20th Century Fox announced that there would be a third installment of Alvin and the Chipmunks, which would be done in 3D. By reading this movie review, you will get a synopsis of what the third installment of this movie is all about.
Set for a December 2011 release date, Alvin and the Chipmunks – Chipwrecked is a much awaited American family comedy movie, which stars Jason Lee. The movie has been produced by Bagdasarian Productions and Regency Enterprises, and it will be distributed by 20th Century Fox. As mentioned earlier in this movie review, the new movie follows the movies Alvin and the Chipmunks (released in 2007) and Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakquel (released in 2009). The actual scheduled release date of the third installment of the movie is December 16, 2011, and unlike the previous two movies, the Motion Picture Association of America has rated Alvin and the Chipmunks – Chipwrecked “G.”
If you had read a movie review for Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakquel, you most likely read that the 2009 film was such a masterwork that it was impossible for it be topped. However, thanks to creative minds and the advancement of 3D technology, the December release of the movie‘s third installment is set to blow everyone out of their seats. Alvin and the Chipmunks – Chipwrecked promises to be everything and more that The Squeakquel was; however, this time it is done on a boat. There are a number of fans of the cartoon that are eagerly awaiting the release of the movie in December; additionally, they are expecting quite a lot from this movie, as the two before were exceptional.
Finally in this movie review, let us take a look at some of the events that take place in this film. Dave Seville (portrayed by Jason Lee) takes a cruise with The Chipmunks, as well as The Chipettes. From the beginning of the cruise, The Chipettes and The Chipmunks see the cruise as their own personal playground, and are causing trouble wherever they go on the ship. Ultimately, their uncontrolled behavior causes them to become shipwrecked (everyone getting lost), which lands them on the Isles of Scilly. While Dave is trying to find the lost trios, The Chipettes and The Chipmunks finds a castaway that has been on the island; however, the trios seem to have found their match.
Free Movie Tickets
Free movie tickets are among the most popular freebies on the market. Studios and advertisement agencies free movie tickets as enticements for increasing sales and profits.
Movie Studios often offer free movie tickets or a free screening of their new movies. The premise is that it will build up word of mouth hype around the movie and attract droves of more theatergoers to watch the movie. For example, when the movie Erin Brockovich was to be released in Bangalore, India, free tickets were distributed to women on a first come- first serve basis to organize an all woman screening on the first day.
Sometimes studios or theatres make arrangements with companies, offices, or educational institutions to distribute free tickets to their members. Children in particular are treated to free movie screenings. Some companies offer free movie tickets as incentives added to their compensation.
Very often, free movie tickets are offered as freebies when using the services or products of certain companies. The Internet is swarming with advertisements for free movie tickets that are given out to surfers who play particular games, order goods, buying products, or opt for free trials. For example, the famous chocolate maker Hershey’s advertises an offer in which one must collect 16 points from specially marked packages of Milk Duds Candy, Whoppers Malted Milk Balls, or Hershey’s Bites Candies to exchange for one free movie ticket.
There’ s also a site called FreeMoviePremiereTickets.com. One can get a pack of 2 movie premier tickets after completing one free offer by the company. The tickets are paid for by the sponsors of the site who benefit by the increase in traffic you generate for them. The tickets are usually shipped in less than three days.
Many offers for free movie tickets end up being scams, but they are often genuine. Consumers usually have nothing to lose but time by looking into these offers.
